Copyright 2012 Alumni Archive.net en-us School News Reports 60 By Peggy Hunt OXNARD, CA -- Numerous students, teachers and parents paid tribute to longtime music director Fundi Legohn during the Oxnard High School (OHS) Marching Band and Auxiliary Annual Spring Concert on Saturday, May 5. Each year, the (OHS) Marching Band Boosters bring together ensembles from OHS’s Jazz Band, 2012 Drumline and Solo performance for a celebration of OHS’s exemplary music program. On Saturday, OHS also celebrated Legohn, who hinted at his retirement after leading the high school band program for the past 20 years. In 1981, he graduated from California State University at Los Angeles with a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Music Education. He continued his music studies at the University of Southern California, where he earned his master’s in music/jazz in 1991. Addressing the crowd, Legohn said, “It is a great pleasure being apart of these kid’s lives and watching them develop. My programs involve discipline and discipline is one of the things that does not exist in many classrooms and in many environments on the streets. Kids know the difference between right and wrong. Discipline really makes them feel good about themselves after they have participated in an event like this. My hope is that I can teach them what it takes now to make it while they are in school, so they will have the ammunition when they leave here. They will be able to take care of business and become a successful individual.” Stan Hakes, Chief of Staff from Supervisor John C. Zaragoza’s office, said he was proud to represent Supervisor Zaragoza and was honored to present the Resolution on behalf of Supervisor Zaragoza to Mr. Legohn. One paragraph on the Resolution read, “The Ventura County Board of Supervisors takes great pleasure in honoring Oxnard High School Music Director Fundi Legohn for his outstanding service to Oxnard High School, as well as to the students and people of the community. We wish him continued success.” “Since 1992, Legohn has selflessly poured his heart and soul into his craft. This means 20 summers of band camp, 20 seasons of football games, hundreds and hundreds of students, and countless practices in all kinds of weather. Legohn’s amazing dedication and patience combined with his willingness to share not only his love of music, but also his time and talents with the students of Oxnard High School is truly inspiring.
